VISUAL JOURNALISM

International Students Banquet at SAU

International Students Banquet is one of the biggest event for international students that takes place in SAU every Spring semester. It is an event organized by the International Students Association. The main motive of this banquet is to simply show everyone what the intentional students association is all about. This event is organized by international students association along with the international students and it is open for everybody in the University. Every year the event takes place in Grand Hall located in Reynolds. The event is full of entertainment including delicious food items from all over the world. Food is the main highlight of this event. Tickets for faculty, staff and community members cost $10 each and student tickets cost $5.

This is one event that is very much popular among the international students. The international students get to show their talents like dancing, singing, cooking, etc. The banquet is full of entertainment and not only intentional students, but overall students in SAU who attend this event thoroughly enjoy it and give positive feedback. I myself am one of the most involved student in this event. I have attended three banquets since I got here and all three times I have involved myself in this event either by performing or emceeing or helping out with decorations, cooking and stuff like this. This is one of the events I enjoy the most and look forward to every year.

#19 CLASSMATE BLOG CRITIQUE

Critiquing my classmates blogs is something that I enjoy doing but at the same time find it to be a difficult task overall. I enjoy it because I can openly give my views and opinions on the blogs that I liked and enjoyed reading which is always a good thing. However, it is difficult because there are so many nice ones that it takes me forever to choose the best ones. All of my classmates have done tremendous job regarding their blogs and I enjoyed reading everybody's blog.

  • So the first one would be Houston's Blog. Overall, he has done a decent job on his blog. I found his blog to be very interesting and well written. Among all the blogs he has written, my favorite one from his lot has to be #15 Entertainment and Popular Culture. I am a huge fan of Jimmy Fallon which is why this post quickly caught my attention and I thought it was nicely done as well.

  • Another blog that was very well presented and that I enjoyed reading was Justice's Blog. His blog has that entertainment factor that doesn't disappoint the reader. All in all it includes good amount of entertaining and interesting information. The one that I liked the most was #11 Civics. I think he has managed to give good amount of knowledge and information on this one and I really liked how he has written this blog.

  • Next one that I found very interesting and well written is Kobe's Blog. I was very impressed by his accuracy and good writing overall. All of his blogs are to the point. The one that mostly caught my attention and I wouldn't mind reading it again is #10 Listening Post. On some parts pf this one he has shared his experience in the dorm and how it has helped him gain information about what's going on.

#17 OPINION (STATE, NATIONAL OR INTERNATIONAL ISSUE)

Beauty without brain?

In June 2nd, 2017 Miss Nepal was held back in my country Nepal. It is just like any other pageant that takes place all over the world. There were four main winners announced that day who would later represent Nepal in other main pageants. The winners were Miss Nepal World 2017 Nikita Chandak who is now representing the country in Miss World 2017 pageant held in China. Next, Miss Earth Nepal 2017 Rojina Shrestha who went on Miss Earth 2017 Philippines. Then there is Miss International Nepal 2017 Niti Shah who went to Japan to represent our country in Miss International 2017 pageant. Lastly, Miss Asia Pacific International Nepal 2017 Sahara Basnet who went to Miss Asia Pacific International 2017 held in Manila, Philippines to represent the country.

During all this, regarding our Miss International Nepal 2017 Niti Shah, an incident took place just few days ago. Niti Shah who went to Japan to represent the country in Miss International 2017 said some really stupid things about women in Nepal and the education system during a group discussion that took place in Miss International 2017 which caused a huge chaos in Nepal and among the Nepalese. We don't know if she did it mistakenly or she really wasn't aware about the situation of women and education in Nepal.

                         https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxbNG9W4jHw

The first thing that's wrong with this speech is that it is negative. She ends up bringing negative points about women in Nepal and education which is completely wrong. It can be clearly seen that the situation of women and education not only in urban areas but in rural areas of Nepal has been changing in a good way. It was gotten way better than before. That is one of the things she should've researched more about. Another thing that is wrong here is that she also mentions how our country is backward in terms of education which is incorrect as well. Her entire speech consists of randomness. Seems like she didn't do any research before going to the pageant. The things she said seemed very demeaning and humiliating for all the Nepalese including myself.

#16 OPINION (LOCAL ISSUE)

Being an international student in SAU

I came to SAU in Spring 2015. Ever since then my experience here has been indeed a nice yet a confusing one. It has been nice because when I got here my sister was already studying here which made it easier for me to fit in. I was lucky enough to have her as my roommate as soon as I got here unlike everyone who would be assigned roommates in a random order. I was also aware of almost everything about SAU. My sister introduced me to her friends, I started interacting with other Freshmen and slowing I started fitting in to this University. At least that's what I thought.

But as days passed by here at SAU, I myself started learning new things about the University and people studying here. Some of the people I met and interacted with were very nice and friendly but it wouldn't be wrong to say that I have had some bad experiences as well. But as we know, wherever we go in life we are ought to have both good as well as bad experience so what I thought was even if I had some bad experiences, I would learn from it and move on and I did exactly that most of the time. So basically, my first semester was a good experience overall. I did have a lot of fun with my international buddies but I did become friends with many of the people from here as well.

Now, I am in my 6th semester here at SAU and after all the semesters I can happily say that I did the right thing by choosing SAU. There isn't much to do here in Magnolia but in a way I think that is a good thing because it will be easier to graduate on time.

How much do the kids of Stranger Things make?

Stranger Things is a thrilling Netflix original drama which stars Golden Globe winning actress Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, who lives in a small Indiana town in 1983 inspired by a time when tales of science fiction captivated audiences. The entire story revolves around the fact that Joyce's son Will (Noah Schnapp) goes missing and Joyce along with Will's friends Mike (Fin Wolfhard), Lucas (Caled McLauglin), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) start looking for Will. In this process, they encounter Eleven played by Millie Bobby Brown who happens to be a very unusual girl who is a government experiment with supernatural forces. Along the was they also get the help of Chief Hopper played by David Harbour.

Now talking about how much these kids earn. Being in a Netflix Original, it won't be wrong for us to think that these kids might earn a fortune. Lets find out what they earn per episode.

Millie Bobby Brown - $30,000 per episode

Noah Schnapp - $30,000 per episode

Fin Wolfhard - $30,000 per episode

Caleb McLaughlin - $30,000 per episode

Gaten Matarazzo - $30,000 per episode

Basically, these kids earn the same amount because they have equal part in the series. All of the characters have their individuality and a certain story linked to them.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

I am an international student from Nepal. I came to the US in Spring 2015. Ever since then I have been treated differently in different places in the US that I have been to. International students are the ones who are usually treated in different ways. Sometimes it maybe good and sometimes it maybe be bad. We are generally known as the "outsiders". The reason why we do not stay in our country for our further studies is that there is not much scope of good education like it is in the US. Hence, the good situation of education and developed condition of the States pulls us towards this country in order to peruse education.

There are almost everything that is impossible for the international students to pursue in the States. Attaining education here is doubly expensive for us. In order to get a job, it is whole other story for us. We actually have no way to get a work permit to work here. However, when there was an earthquake in Nepal in April 2015, since then a rule has been applied for us. The rule indicates that we can apply for TPS (Temporary Protected Status) and if we are able to get that, basically, we get to work here legally because through TPS we are able to obtain an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). But it isn't as easy as it sounds.

I had applied for TPS in fall 2016 and I still haven't received my EAD card. The weird part here is that me and my sister had applied together and her EAD has arrived already and she has already started working in a bank here in Magnolia. Whereas my EAD is taking the longest to get here. It took them a few months to send me an approval letter saying that my TPS has been accepted so I really don't understand why is it taking them so long to just send me my EAD card. Not only in my case but some of my friends have been victimized with same problem.

Basically, what I want to point out in this blog is that I think things should be made a little bit easier for us internationals because some of us work really hard and those who work hard should be at least given some opportunities to prove themselves.

#10 LISTENING POST

Listening Post (Campus)

According to me, a listening post is something that gives me bunch of information. When I go somewhere, I end up collected many information, ideas, and thoughts on various topics. Thoroughly catching on to them and creating an understand through it is important to me which I can do by listening posts. My main source of news and information is my cellphone indeed but it won't be wrong for me to say that whenever I am in my campus, either in classroom or at work (on campus), I always end up getting information on recent topics of interest. This has truly made me a more informative person than I was before.

Basically, I depend on my Campus to provide me with information that is necessary for me to obtain and understand. I have six classes this semester and I until this point of the semester, I think I have been provided with much information through my classes, my professors and my friends at my on campus work. Especially three of my media classes which are Report and Writing for the Mass Media, Principles of Public Relations, and International Mass Media have provided me with the maximum amount of information.

I depend on my class and my professors whenever I want some basic information about stuff. First I do look for them on my phone but when I would always prefer face to face information for good understand and proper idea.

UChicago Softball goes abroad

The UChicago Softball team kicked off their summer with a trip to Australia, a week-and-a-half journey that offered the players the chance to eat shrimp on the barbie with Australian state softball teams and snorkel through the Great Barrier Reef. The team showed off their skills on the field, but training wasn’t their primary focus when they ventured abroad. Instead, the trip was about bonding, learning, and experiencing a new culture, said Coach Ruth Kmak. With the opportunity only available every four years, the women took full advantage of being thousands of miles from home.

The team had the chance to step on the field to play the Queensland team of Brisbane and the New South Wales team of Sydney, the Australian state teams that will soon compete for the national championship. Though the Australian team players and the Maroons are at different points in their careers, they all came to the field to play the same game. The Maroons took this opportunity to enjoy the new competition while changing up players’ positions, reminding them that the goal was to have fun.

“It was incredible to watch these women play against a strong Australian team, and it was even more enjoyable to listen to the conversations being had. [It was] a true learning experience for all,” assistant coaches Alyssa Davis and Alex Chiodo wrote in the team's travel blog about their game in Brisbane. These conversations often occurred during post-game team dinners which were highlights of the trip for Kmak. “They’re a great opportunity for our student athletes to sit down and talk to these players from another country,” she said about the beloved tradition.
Along with the enriching conversations came a lot of food, a perk for any athlete, but especially those having just played a game.

From Brisbane, the team made their way to Cairns, where they ventured into the Outback. Their brief bout involved emu sightings, a traditional pub lunch, and cave explorations a favorite experience for many of the team members.

“We visited two caves and saw the fossilized remains of the ancient coral reefs with hidden limestone labyrinths creating incredible underground worlds. We studied stalagmites and stalactites and learned about the bats and other wildlife living meters underground,” players Alexa Hanelin and Serena Moss wrote. The next day the team went snorkeling through the Great Barrier Reef, learning about the ocean’s wildlife and debunking various myths about the Reef as they swam through the waters.

It’s experiences like seeing the Great Barrier Reef and exploring Bondi Beach in Sydney the final leg of their trip that will linger with the team long after they leave UChicago, Kmak said. The trips have also become growth opportunities for the players; Kmak added that adventurous and inquisitive UChicago students appreciate the opportunity to be free to explore new cultures as much as possible.
While UChicago supports teams’ efforts to take these types of journeys, it’s the coaching staff and athletes who make it possible with three years of planning. From fundraising to signing waivers and travel forms, it’s nonstop work until they’re on the plane. Still, the payoff is worth it. “It’s an outstanding opportunity that we have because we’re at a great university that supports and values those types of growth experiences,” Kmak said.

This year’s trip was not the team’s first. Over the past 16 years, the softball team has ventured to Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Spain, each trip involving a new team and different adventures. However each trip has left players with stronger bonds, new experiences, and stories to be told.

North Lake College Gunman

Where did the shooting take place?

On May 4th 2017, there was a shooting in a very well known community college in Irving, Texas. Janeera Nickol Gonzalez, one of the students of North Lake College was found shot to death in a common study area inside the Performance Hall building around noon on that very day, shortly after the school went into lock down because a shooter was reported on campus.

Officers found the body of the gunman, 21 year old Adrian Victor Torres, inside a locker room shower stall in Building F, which is adjacent to the North Lake Aquatic Center. He has what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Gonzalez's mother, Lucia Gonzalez, told WFAA-TV that her daughter didn't see Torres as a threat. "He had been stalking her for quite a while, but she didn't make anything of it," she said. Lucia Gonzalez also said that her daughter hadn't dated Torres and that the two weren't friends. She told that Torres had left North Lake to attend school elsewhere, but had returned to the school in the past few weeks.

Witnesses told the family that Torres had walked up to Gonzalez and yelled at her before shooting: "You know who I am, and you know why I am here." The Gonzalezes said their daughter, who was studying Kinesiology, was going to graduate in coming weeks. They went to North Lake to look for her when she didn't respond to text messages Wednesday afternoon. "She was the best daughter any mother could have. The best girl, the best of everything," her mother said. "We're not gonna see her again. She was a harmless girl," said her father Juan Gonzalez. "She was very sweet."

DASHAIN - Biggest festival in Nepal

The Dashain Festival is also celebrated by Hindus and Nepalese in practically every other part of the planet where they live. In Nepal, Dashain is the longest and most notable festival on the calendar, and many Nepalese expatriates actually return to Nepal specifically to observe Dashain Festival in their homeland.
Dashain runs from the “bright moon” until the full moon in the Hindu month of Ashvin, lasting for 15 days. On the gregorian calendar, it falls in either September or October, varying from year to year due to the differences between a lunar versus a solar based time-keeping system. During Dashain, many Nepalese businesses and public buildings will be closed, so the tourist will need to plan ahead carefully.
Dashain is celebrated to mark the victory, according to Hindu religious writings, of Ramayan over the evil demon-king, Ravana, and over the demon Mahisasur, who cruelly terrorised the people of India in the form of a raging water buffalo. The Hindu goddess Durga was said to be instrumental in winning these victories, so she is especially worshiped at this time. In general, the holiday season of Dashain is a celebration of “the triumph of good over evil,” though it is tied to specific Hindu stories.

Dashain Traditions

The people of Nepal celebrate Dashain with great festivity. Some of their traditions associated with the holiday include the following:
  • Kites a flown as Dashain Festival draws near and during the festival. People fly highly decorative kites from their roof tops and elsewhere and shout out “Changa Cheit” whenever kite strings get tangled.
  • Playing card games is common during Dashain. Families get together to play for both money and for fun. While all ages take part in kite-flying, kids usually are out flying their kites while adults play the card games.
  • Homes are cleaned thoroughly and decorated ornately. This is meant to be a gesture to the Hindu “mother goddess” to come down and bless the home with good luck. Distant family members also gather and enjoy reunions in the clean and beautiful houses.
  • Many purchase new clothing and wear it at this time of year. Those who live in dire poverty don their best clothing and may buy clothes at few other times of the year besides Dashain.
  • Temporary swings are constructed out of bamboo and set up for children to play at. Adults even stop to try out the swings, which can be up to 20 feet high. They are disassembled at the end of the festivities.
  • Literally thousands of animal sacrifices are made, including buffalo, rams, and ducks. They are meant to appease Hindu goddesses and are sacrificed at temples all over the country. Many also rise early in the mornings and visit temples to worship various gods.
  • Since Dashain Festival arrives just after the harvest, there is much rice and grain in homes at this time of year. Worshipers use pigmented, red rice, called “tika,” to mark their foreheads. Some also mark them with a white circle instead, however.

Human rights situation not satisfactory

Kathmandu, September 25

In a meeting of the Legislature-Parliament today, the Legislation Committee presented various reports prepared by it.

Committee President Ganga Chaudhary presented the committee’s supplementary reports relating to the Civil Code- 2017 and Civil Procedure Code Bill-2017, reports on remuneration, conditions of service and facilities of the Chief Justice and Supreme Court judges 2017 and the report on remuneration, conditions of service and facilities of judges of high and district courts 2017.
On the occasion, the Legislation Committee chair said reports would help in timely revision of the acts concerned. Similarly, in the meeting, Social Justice and Human Rights Committee President Sushil Kumar Shrestha presented a review report concerning the Human Rights Commission’s report of fiscal year 2015-16. He insisted on the need to implement the report to strengthen and sustain democracy. The NRHC report was brought to the House after a long time, he said, calling for an end to impunity and establishing the rule of law in the country.
“There is a situation that one should go through a strike while seeking justice,” he said, raising the question why the last rites of Nanda Prasad Adhikari who had died during the fast-onto-death for justice for his murdered son were not conducted yet. “The situation of human rights is not satisfactory.  Who is responsible for so?”
Adhikari had died on 22 September  2014, on the 333rd day of his fast while demanding the arrest of the murderers of his youngest son Krishna Prasad Adhikari who was killed after abduction on 6 June 2004 in Chitwan during the Maoist armed conflict. Likewise, Health Minister Girirajmani Pokhrel presented the Rapti Institute of Health Sciences Bill 2017. The bill was meant for ensuring quality health service to the people while making it accessible to all, he said.

Soldiers remove debris from a partially collapsed municipal building in Juchitan, Mexico, on Friday, September 8. A magnitude 8.1 earthquake was registered the night before off Mexico's southern coast. It is the strongest quake to hit the country in 100 years, according to President Enrique Pena Nieto.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said the temblor felt by about 50 million people across the country was the strongest earthquake Mexico has experienced in 100 years. In September 1985, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake killed an estimated 9,500 people in and around Mexico City. This one hit late Thursday, when many people were asleep. The states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, home to about 9 million people, are located closest to the earthquake's epicenter. They are two of the most impoverished areas in Mexico, and were likely hit the hardest.

Therefore, I think this massive earthquake shook the twitter feed so much so that it couldn't be unnoticeable. This is a very sad event that took place and it changed the lives of many people in Mexico. It is the strongest quake to hit the country in 100 years so this is definitely a big deal. Not only that but it has also been said that this earthquake might lead to a Tsunami as well. So this has to be one of the most serious issue so far.
