DASHAIN - Biggest festival in Nepal

The Dashain Festival is also celebrated by Hindus and Nepalese in practically every other part of the planet where they live. In Nepal, Dashain is the longest and most notable festival on the calendar, and many Nepalese expatriates actually return to Nepal specifically to observe Dashain Festival in their homeland.
Dashain runs from the “bright moon” until the full moon in the Hindu month of Ashvin, lasting for 15 days. On the gregorian calendar, it falls in either September or October, varying from year to year due to the differences between a lunar versus a solar based time-keeping system. During Dashain, many Nepalese businesses and public buildings will be closed, so the tourist will need to plan ahead carefully.
Dashain is celebrated to mark the victory, according to Hindu religious writings, of Ramayan over the evil demon-king, Ravana, and over the demon Mahisasur, who cruelly terrorised the people of India in the form of a raging water buffalo. The Hindu goddess Durga was said to be instrumental in winning these victories, so she is especially worshiped at this time. In general, the holiday season of Dashain is a celebration of “the triumph of good over evil,” though it is tied to specific Hindu stories.

Dashain Traditions

The people of Nepal celebrate Dashain with great festivity. Some of their traditions associated with the holiday include the following:
  • Kites a flown as Dashain Festival draws near and during the festival. People fly highly decorative kites from their roof tops and elsewhere and shout out “Changa Cheit” whenever kite strings get tangled.
  • Playing card games is common during Dashain. Families get together to play for both money and for fun. While all ages take part in kite-flying, kids usually are out flying their kites while adults play the card games.
  • Homes are cleaned thoroughly and decorated ornately. This is meant to be a gesture to the Hindu “mother goddess” to come down and bless the home with good luck. Distant family members also gather and enjoy reunions in the clean and beautiful houses.
  • Many purchase new clothing and wear it at this time of year. Those who live in dire poverty don their best clothing and may buy clothes at few other times of the year besides Dashain.
  • Temporary swings are constructed out of bamboo and set up for children to play at. Adults even stop to try out the swings, which can be up to 20 feet high. They are disassembled at the end of the festivities.
  • Literally thousands of animal sacrifices are made, including buffalo, rams, and ducks. They are meant to appease Hindu goddesses and are sacrificed at temples all over the country. Many also rise early in the mornings and visit temples to worship various gods.
  • Since Dashain Festival arrives just after the harvest, there is much rice and grain in homes at this time of year. Worshipers use pigmented, red rice, called “tika,” to mark their foreheads. Some also mark them with a white circle instead, however.

Human rights situation not satisfactory

Kathmandu, September 25

In a meeting of the Legislature-Parliament today, the Legislation Committee presented various reports prepared by it.

Committee President Ganga Chaudhary presented the committee’s supplementary reports relating to the Civil Code- 2017 and Civil Procedure Code Bill-2017, reports on remuneration, conditions of service and facilities of the Chief Justice and Supreme Court judges 2017 and the report on remuneration, conditions of service and facilities of judges of high and district courts 2017.
On the occasion, the Legislation Committee chair said reports would help in timely revision of the acts concerned. Similarly, in the meeting, Social Justice and Human Rights Committee President Sushil Kumar Shrestha presented a review report concerning the Human Rights Commission’s report of fiscal year 2015-16. He insisted on the need to implement the report to strengthen and sustain democracy. The NRHC report was brought to the House after a long time, he said, calling for an end to impunity and establishing the rule of law in the country.
“There is a situation that one should go through a strike while seeking justice,” he said, raising the question why the last rites of Nanda Prasad Adhikari who had died during the fast-onto-death for justice for his murdered son were not conducted yet. “The situation of human rights is not satisfactory.  Who is responsible for so?”
Adhikari had died on 22 September  2014, on the 333rd day of his fast while demanding the arrest of the murderers of his youngest son Krishna Prasad Adhikari who was killed after abduction on 6 June 2004 in Chitwan during the Maoist armed conflict. Likewise, Health Minister Girirajmani Pokhrel presented the Rapti Institute of Health Sciences Bill 2017. The bill was meant for ensuring quality health service to the people while making it accessible to all, he said.

#2 TWITTER BREAKING NEWS UPDATES OVER A 24-HOUR PERIOD

Earthquake in Chiapas, Mexico

Soldiers remove debris from a partially collapsed municipal building in Juchitan, Mexico, on Friday, September 8. A magnitude 8.1 earthquake was registered the night before off Mexico's southern coast. It is the strongest quake to hit the country in 100 years, according to President Enrique Pena Nieto.

 Link: 8.0 Earthquake in Mexico

President Enrique Peña Nieto said the temblor felt by about 50 million people across the country was the strongest earthquake Mexico has experienced in 100 years. In September 1985, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake killed an estimated 9,500 people in and around Mexico City. This one hit late Thursday, when many people were asleep. The states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, home to about 9 million people, are located closest to the earthquake's epicenter. They are two of the most impoverished areas in Mexico, and were likely hit the hardest.

Therefore, I think this massive earthquake shook the twitter feed so much so that it couldn't be unnoticeable. This is a very sad event that took place and it changed the lives of many people in Mexico. It is the strongest quake to hit the country in 100 years so this is definitely a big deal. Not only that but it has also been said that this earthquake might lead to a Tsunami as well. So this has to be one of the most serious issue so far.

    #1 DEFINING NEWS

    My Definition of News

Basically, news is newly received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events. Things that matter to people are only displayed as news. Yes, anybody can post anything they want or however they want portraying as "news" but the audience reading it or watching it only focuses on things that are important to them and the things that are actually trending all over the world. Generally, there are two types of news, hard news and soft news. In simple words, hard news are serious news which include international news, political news, business and economic news and health or education news. Whereas soft news are news related to entertainment or celebrity, lifestyle, arts and culture or sports.

According to me, news is something that provides certain information that can keep me updated on what's going on around the world. I usually find out most of the news from social media. Nowadays news are posted almost everywhere. From newspapers and magazines to television and all the various social media, news are literally posted everywhere. So for me, the easiest way to get hold of news is social media as I am on my social media maximum time of the day. News posted in the social media are equally reliable as the news posted in newspapers or shown in the news channels.

In general, all kinds of news are important to me as well as interesting. It is true for a fact that hard news are more important than other type of news but other kinds of news can be a source of entertainment for the readers. So I personally prefer to read through all kinds of news because more information is never harmful. A news only becomes stronger and appealing to the readers when it has sources. If there isn't a reliable source or a meaningful zest to the news then the readers might not accept the news or they might even ignore it completely. I mostly prefer to read soft news which includes the news of entertainment section but that doesn't mean I neglect hard news. Being a student majoring in Mass Media, I find it essential to go through all kinds of news and stay more informative.
